Written homework began for first graders in September. It is assigned as a weekly calendar notebook journal. For the first few weeks of school (month of August), please establish good home routines for homework for your child. Please R E A D with your child every day for 20 minutes or more. Talk together about what you have read. Your child could illustrate and write about his/her favorite part of the story or make a learning connection. Please prepare a quiet area at home that can be used for homework this year. Gather some supplies that will be needed: pencils, colored pencils or crayons, a pencil sharpener, and erasers.
ALL 1st graders will need addition and subtraction flashcards for math practice at home this year. This is another HW supply you may want to gather early In the year when supplies are often on sale. We will discuss flashcards at our October conference and begin using them during the 2nd 9-weeks. Please look for flashcards with facts to 10 to start the year but after mid-year, the flashcards will need to include all facts to 18. Many bigger sets include both.
Once written HW begins in September, students should work throughout the week to complete 4 assignments in a HW notebook that will be sent home from school in September. Please return all completed homework in the notebook each Friday. Students can collect fun reward stickers for their notebook cover for HW that is complete for the week!! Homework is meant to be a brief reinforcement or review of what we are working on at school. Your child should not struggle with homework...if this happens please let me know. Homework instills responsibility that is very important for first graders as they are learning to become more independent students.
In addition to the HW calendar, students should also maintain these study and reading skills each week:.
1. Read every day for 20 minutes or more (to or with a grownup)
2. Study current sight words and spelling words as assigned.
3. Work on math facts (please have flashcards at home) for + and - facts up to 18.
4. Log onto Dreambox (math) and IStation (reading) from home for extra practice whenever possible.
